I've heard that you can get a bonus week at a timeshare in some circumstances. What are the circumstances, and are there any catches?

Is this a good incentive when deciding what timeshare to rent, say in the same area?

Bonus weeks are typically given or awarded by the resort themselves when they are pitching a timeshare sale. Usually offered as an incentive to buy. There may be certain restrictions regarding the usage of these bonus weeks, depending on which resort or group the timeshare ownership is deeded through.

Many times the resort will allow the owner to give or sell the bonus weeks to others.
